Cheri took part in a group art exhibition “Little Deities” at No Vacancy Gallery in Melbourne. The idea behind the show was really interesting – 60 artists were invited to customise a doll on the theme of ‘little deities.’

Here is Cheri’s result. A little goddess. She is the goddess of beginnings, of moving forward, from new life to new situations.

Opening night was a huge success. It was packed full and drinks were flowing all around. A fantastic part of the exhibition was to see the same doll in so many variations! Thanks to all the people who took the time out to come down.

Nucleus Gallery: Harry Potter tribute exhibition

Cheri was asked by the good folk at Nucleus Gallery to take part in their Harry Potter tribute art exhibition. They also have a blog website which you can view here.

Here is a description of the art exhibition from Nucleus Gallery:

The Harry Potter Tribute Art Exhibition is a collection of work gathered through private invitations, open submissions and the common love for all things Harry Potter.
Opening in our gallery July 9 2011, a week before the final Harry Potter film, the exhibition will feature over 50 artists and nearly 100 tribute works in paintings, sculptures and installations.
This two-level exhibit is now open during our regular business hours (Sun – Thurs Noon to 8pm, Fri & Sat 11am to 10pm)
Admission is free from now through August 1st. Open to the public.

Music Connects: AGDA poster comp 2011

Robert joined a select group of talented designers that Artisan sponsored for the 2011 AGDA poster competition.

The theme was a very open brief on music, so Robert chose to create a poster on the idea of music connecting people, past all barriers of race, age, religion etc. Sadly, it didn’t make the finals for the poster comp but he had a lot of fun experimenting, meeting other designers, and scoring free pizza and alcohol (courtesy of Artisan).

We took an in-depth tour of Melbourne’s famous street art. Though there was a bit of rain, it was a fun experience, and eye-opening to a lot of trends and styles.

Robert took part in a group drawing exhibition at Brunswick Street Gallery.

The pictures he made for this exhibition were grouped under “Katanas and Rollerblades.” These pictures follow a fantastical world where a bunch of beautiful girls in rollerblades and armed with katana swords undertake a host of exciting adventures, battling evil ninja squads and saving innocent bystanders in the process. One of the primary inspirations for these works is Robert’s love of comic books, and the pictures were intended to function as a comic in space – literally a related series of works on a wall where the viewer can create meaning from the combination of images.

Nucleus Gallery: Power in Numbers 4 art exhibition

Cheri was invited by Nucleus Gallery to take part in their Power in Numbers 4 art exhibition in LA. You can view more info about the art exhibition on the Nucleus Gallery website here and here.

Here is a description from the Nucleus Gallery website:

Power In Numbers (PIN) combines a love of art with philanthropy for our biggest event of the year!
Our 4th Annual Power in Numbers (PIN4) event aims to be more epic than ever as we invite artists and illustrators from all backgrounds, industries and aesthetics to take part in creating art for a cause. Having been consistently well received in the past, the PIN exhibit features over 100 international and local artists creating 5″ X 7″, 2-dimentional, original artwork in the desired medium and theme of their choosing.
Each artwork piece will be priced at $100.00 and a selection of artworks will be auctioned. A portion of the night’s sales will benefit the American Red Cross (San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter) on emergency response efforts.

Cheri made a few pictures based on inspiration from some of her Japanese roots and experience. She created a set of four paintings based on eating noodles in Japan.

Vietnam: KPMG Global Conference

The Red Penny Studios team went to Vietnam to work at the KPMG global conference with their friends, Mind Gallery. Our job was to facilitate the art workshop as head artists, working with Mind Gallery and local Vietnamese artists. During the workshop we work directly with the KPMG employees to create a joint artwork. Being head artists, we had to design the overall look of the final art piece to make sure so many people (approx 80!) can result in a unified piece.

Inspired by the Vietnamese traditional dress – the Aoi Dai – as well as the beautiful greens of the Vietnamese landscape, helped us nail the final design. The final artwork took on a vibrant green, gold and red colour scheme that took on the Vietnamese environment but also looking to the future as so many were from the youth side of KPMG.

Here are photos of the final artwork as well as an early prep sketch. You can see we are really concentrating on the shapes and colours throughout the piece.

Osaka Murals

Flashback to 2005! Browsing through the archives we found this gem.

In Osaka, Japan, we made a whole bunch of murals based on the theme of entertainment. This involved painting a lot of the things we love to paint – acrobats, clowns, circus, burlesque dancers and the like. Throw in old movie posters and Charlie Chaplin and we were having a ball! There was a lot of creative freedom in this project, and I think it shows in the final murals. You can also see that we painted illustrations on screens and signs to complement the murals.
